Woodson Clinton Armes was born in Jayton, Texas, on May 24, 1912. He presently resides near Stephenville. Bro. Armes lived in the home of Dr. J. B. Tidwell during his student days at Baylor University. He served as Professor of Bible at Baylor from 1938-1943 and pastored churches in Waco, Ft. Worth and El Paso in ensuing years. Bro. Armes has preached around the world and received many honors. In 1983, he was recognized as Texas Baptist Elder Statesman at Independence (Texas) Baptist Church. During Bro. Armes' ministry at Hewitt, there was progress in many areas. Electric fans were purchased for the church; new seats were installed in the center sections of the Sanctuary; new hymnals were bought. Beginning in January, 1940, prayer meetings were held twice a month on the Thursday following preaching Sundays. Later that year, the Church became full-time. Bro. Armes presented a plan for tithing, which was approved by the congregation. Twenty-two people signed pledge cards. In March, 1941, a plan for building three rooms and a baptistry was presented. There is no record in the minutes of the Church of the completion date of these additions, but the baptistry was used for the first time on July 6, 1941. Bro. Armes' emphasis on missions is reflected by the increase in gifts to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering during his ministry. In his first year as pastor, that Offering was $40.57. In his last year at Hewitt, the Lottie Moon Offering was $750. |
